Facial Implants

Facial implants are designed to increase projection of specific areas of the face, creating improved balance in the facial features and thereby improving appearance. They may be used to help correct signs of aging or to correct a weak underlying bone structure in the cheeks, chin or jaw.

Facial Implants in Boston: Who is a Good Candidate?

Good candidates for facial implants in Boston have inadequate bone structure or tissue atrophy in one or more areas of the face. These problems can result in a hollow appearance in the cheeks or a lack of chin projection, causing an apparent disproportion that you may want to correct. In these cases, facial implants may be an appropriate solution.

Some common indications for facial implants include:

  • Flat or hollow cheeks
  • Weak chin or lack of chin projection
  • Nose appears relatively large
  • Forehead appears relatively large

Dr. Howrigan will evaluate your facial characteristics to determine if a facial implant can meet your aesthetic goals. In some cases, a non-surgical alternative such as an injectable wrinkle filler can augment an area of the face that lacks volume. During your consultation, the doctor can recommend the best treatment for you, whether it’s surgery with an alloplastic implant or a dermal filler.

What to Expect During Facial Implant Surgery

Surgical placement of a chin implant requires 30 minutes to 1 hour. During the procedure, Dr. Howrigan selects the proper size and shape implant to enhance your appearance and inserts it into a pocket over the front of the jawbone. To place the implant, a small incision is made inside the mouth (along the lower lip) or in the skin just under the chin area.

Cheek implant surgery requires about 45 minutes when done alone. The implant is often placed during another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery. To insert a cheek implant, your doctor makes an incision inside your upper lip or lower eyelid. A pocket is then formed, and an implant is inserted and secured in place.

After Facial Implant Surgery: Post-Operative Steps and Recovery

Although the results will be immediately visible, it may take some time for swelling to subside, so you may not be able to accurately judge the results right away.

Dr. Howrigan will instruct you about dental and oral hygiene during your recovery. Your activities and diet will be somewhat restricted. In some cases, the ability to smile, talk or move your mouth may also be limited for several days to weeks after surgery.
